De embryogenese is de ontwikkeling van de bevruchte eicel van een dier gedurende de eerste zeven weken na de bevruchting. In deze zeven weken groeit de zygote middels mitose (celdeling) van embryo uit tot foetus. De stadia die in deze eerste zeven weken onderscheiden worden zijn achtereenvolgens zygote, morula (het vroegste embryonale stadium), blastula, gastrulatie, neurulatie en, na de eerste week van groei, de organogenese.
