Ephedra es un género de arbustos, el único de la familia de las efedráceas (Ephedraceae). Estas plantas se distribuyen por climas secos y templados salvo Australia, principalmente del hemisferio norte y en el hemisferio sur en la cordillera de los Andes. Son gimnospermas gnetales compuestas por 60 especies, las cuales son en su mayoría arbustos muy ramificados con ramas fotosintéticas de hojas escasas y con forma de escama.
