確率論において、確率変数の期待値(きたいち、英: expected value)とは、確率変数のすべての値に確率の重みをつけた加重平均である。確率分布に対して定義する場合は「平均」と呼ばれることが多い。 例えば、賭博において、期待値を受け取れる賞金の「見込み」の金額とすることがある。ただし、期待値を取る確率変数値の確率が最大とは限らず、確率変数値が期待値を取るわけでもない。しかし、独立同分布であれば、標本平均は期待値に収束することが知られている(大数の法則)。 期待値が意味をもつのは、根元事象の確率がある程度均等な場合である。確率が非常に極端な値をとる根元事象がある場合は、期待値の概念にはなじまない。例えば、「保険」や「宝くじ」では高額の保険金や当選金が得られる確率はとても小さいので期待値は負の値になるが、そのことをもって、保険に入ることや宝くじの購入が単なる損失であると判断するのは、適当ではない。
