Gaetano Salvemini

Gaetano Salvemini was an Italian politician, historian, and university teacher. He was educated at the University of Florence and studied under Pasquale Villari. His professional career included teaching positions at the University of Pisa, the University of Florence, and Harvard University. He worked in Pisa and Florence and held citizenship in Italy, the United States, and the Kingdom of Italy.

Salvemini was a member of the Italian Socialist Party and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He also belonged to the Medieval Academy of America. His fields of work included politics, political activity, anti-fascism, and history. He was recognized in the American Academy Arts Sciences collection.

He authored 149 works, including Memorie di un fuoruscito, Che cosa è la coltura?, Il Tribunale speciale fascista, Giuseppe Mazzini dall'aprile 1846 all'aprile 1848, and Movimento socialista e questione meridionale. He had five children and spoke Italian and English. He was born in Molfetta on September 8, 1873, and died in Sorrento on September 6, 1957.
