They may be called shelf mushrooms or bracket fungi and have a high genetic diversity. Ganoderma can be differentiated from other polypores because they have a double-walled basidiospore. They are used in traditional Asian medicine.

靈芝屬(學名:Ganoderma),又称木灵芝、神芝、芝草、仙草、瑞草,广义上灵芝包括灵芝科(英语:Ganodermataceae)及其近缘科属的种类,狭义上则是指广泛栽培的特定种类。 中国古代认为灵芝具有长生不老、起死回生的功效,视为仙草。 紫芝含麦角固醇(Ergosterol)、有機酸(順蓖麻酸、延胡索酸等)、氨基葡萄糖、多糖類、樹脂、甘露醇等。 赤芝含麦角固醇、樹脂、脂肪酸、甘露醇和多糖類,又含生物鹼、內酯、香豆精、水溶性蛋白質和多種酶類。
