George Enesco

George Enescu was a Romanian and French composer, violinist, pianist, and conductor. Born in 1881, he was educated at the Conservatoire de Paris and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. His notable works include the opera Œdipe, and his compositions span the genres of opera, symphony, chamber music, and piano. He studied under Gabriel Fauré, Robert Fuchs, Joseph Hellmesberger, and Jules Massenet.

Enescu was employed by the Conservatoire de Paris, the École Normale de Musique de Paris Alfred Cortot, the Accademia Musicale Chigiana, and the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra. He was a student of Marius Constant, Yehudi Menuhin, Christian Ferras, and Ivry Gitlis. He received the Knight of the Legion of Honour award. He spoke and wrote in Romanian and French.

Enescu died in the 8th arrondissement of Paris in 1955. He is buried at Père Lachaise Cemetery. He was married to Marie Cantacuzène.
