George Uhlenbeck

George Eugène Uhlenbeck (1900–1988) was a physicist and university teacher who held citizenship in the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the United States. Born in Batavia, Jakarta, he died in Boulder following a stroke. Uhlenbeck was educated at Delft University of Technology and Leiden University, where he studied under doctoral advisor Paul Ehrenfest. His academic career included positions at Utrecht University, Leiden University, the University of Michigan, and The Rockefeller University.

Working in theoretical physics, Uhlenbeck authored works such as *Lectures in Statistical Mechanics* and *Transport phenomena in polyatomic gases*. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physics and received the Max Planck Medal, Lorentz Medal, Oersted Medal, and National Medal of Science. Uhlenbeck was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Physical Society, and the National Academy of Sciences. His students included Abraham Pais and Emil Konopinski.
