Abraham Pais

Abraham Pais, born on 19 May 1918 in Amsterdam, was a physicist and university teacher with citizenship of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the United States. He worked in theoretical physics, studied under George Uhlenbeck, and had Léon Rosenfeld as doctoral advisor. He was educated at Utrecht University and the University of Amsterdam, and worked for Columbia University and The Rockefeller University.

He belonged to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physics. His awards included the Guggenheim Fellowship, the National Book Award, the J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Prize and the Oskar Klein Medal. His child was Josh Pais. He died on 28 July 2000 in Copenhagen of cardiovascular disease.
