GNU Hurd ist ein in Assembler und C geschriebener Kernel (Betriebssystemkern) mit einem Mikrokernel als Basis. Dieser implementiert Dateisysteme, Netzwerkprotokolle, Datei-Zugriffskontrollen und andere Eigenschaften. Die Entwicklung des Kernels begann 1990, ist allerdings weitestgehend zum Stillstand gekommen (Stand 2021). Die zur Entwicklung geschaffene gcc hat große Verbreitung gefunden.
