Hyperacusis is overgevoeligheid voor externe geluiden waar nog weinig over bekend is. Het is een symptoom, geen ziekte, evenals tinnitus, waarbij juist interne geluiden klachten geven. Hyperacusis verschilt van misofonie (haatgevoelens tegenover geluid) en fonofobie (angst voor geluid). Hyperacusis kan voorkomen in combinatie met tinnitus en Tonisch tensor tympani syndroom.
