Een instinct is een soortspecifiek en aangeboren gedragspatroon, waarbij ervaring of leren geen rol speelt. Het instinct van een organisme is genetisch vastgelegd, waarbij specifieke actiepatronen (stimulus-respons) optreden als een gebonden keten van reflexen (fixed action patterns), bijvoorbeeld de reacties van een spin op specifieke trillingen in haar web. Ook het bouwen van een spinnenweb is een zeer goed voorbeeld van instinctief gedrag.
