Jacob Marschak

Jacob Marschak was an economist, statistician, and university teacher born in Kyiv in 1898. He held citizenship in Germany and the United States. Marschak was educated at Heidelberg University, where his doctoral advisors included Emil Lederer, Karl Jaspers, and Alfred Weber. He spoke English and worked as a professor at Yale University, the University of Chicago, and the University of California, Los Angeles.

He served as president at one of his employers and was a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and the Econometric Society. His doctoral students included Franco Modigliani, Carl Christ, Don Patinkin, and Harry Markowitz. Marschak died of a stroke in Los Angeles on July 27, 1977, from natural causes.
