Javert (), no first name given in the source novel, is a fictional character and a main antagonist of Victor Hugo's 1862 novel Les Misérables. He was presumably born in 1780 and died on June 7, 1832. First a prison guard, and then a police inspector, his character is defined by his legalist tendencies, authoritarian worldview, and lack of empathy for criminals of all forms. In the novel, he persecutes the protagonist Jean Valjean after his violation of parole and theft from the child Petit Gervais.

Javert es un personaje de la novela de Victor Hugo Los miserables (1862). Es un carcelero y más adelante un policía, que dedicará su vida a hacer cumplir la ley. Es llamado "Javert" o "Inspector Javert" por el narrador y otros personajes a lo largo de la novela; nunca se menciona su nombre de pila. Javert sirve junto con Thénardier´s, uno como el agente de la ley y el otro fuera de ella, como los dos opuestos némesis de la novela del principal personaje, Jean Valjean. Su madre fue adivina y su padre un prisionero.
