Johann Baptist Wendling (1723-1797) was born in Rappoltsweiler in Alsace. Very little is known about Wendling’s early years growing up in a region influenced both by German and French traditions and language, but we do know that this area of 18th century Europe enjoyed a rich relationship with the transverse flute dating back to medieval times.
