Labeotropheus

Labeotropheus is a genus of fish in the family Cichlidae endemic to Lake Malawi in eastern Africa. It includes at least 11 species, each with a number of subspecies or races. Further taxonomic work is required to determine how many species exist. These cichlids are popular ornamental fish and are ideally suited to the cichlid aquarium. Like many Malawi cichlids, these species are algal grazers. Like all cichlids from Lake Malawi these cichlids are best maintained in hard, alkaline water. Лабеотрофеусы (лат. Labeotropheus) — небольшой род эндемичных рыб семейства цихловых озера Малави (Ньяса) в Восточной Африке. Он включает в себя по крайней мере два вида, каждый из которых состоит из нескольких подвидов или рас. Относятся к группе Мбуна (что означает «жители скал»). Лабеотрофеусы являются популярными декоративными рыбами и идеально подходят для аквариума с цихлидами. Самцы и самки отличаются окраской. Рыбы подвижны и агрессивны в период размножения и при обороне территории. Как и многие цихлиды Малави лабеотрофеусы питаются водорослями. Самки вынашивают икру во рту и мальки в первое время во время опасности и ночью также прячутся в рот.
