In seiner dritten Enzyklika Laborem exercens („durch Arbeit…“) aus dem Jahre 1981 schreibt Papst Johannes Paul II. über die Arbeit als eines der Kennzeichen des Menschen, die ihn von anderen Geschöpfen unterscheidet. Außerdem dient diese Enzyklika auch der Unterstützung der unabhängigen polnischen Gewerkschaft Solidarność.
