Leo Frobenius

Leo Frobenius was a German anthropologist, art historian, archaeologist, and ethnologist. He was born in Berlin in 1873 and died in Verbania in 1938. A citizen of the German Reich, he worked primarily in Togoland, Africa, and specialized in anthropology and African studies. He wrote in German and was employed by institutions including the Goethe University Frankfurt, the Frobenius Institute, the Museum der Weltkulturen, and the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology, and Prehistory.

Frobenius received the Goethe Plaque of the City of Frankfurt. His notable works include *Die Bildene Kunst der Afrikaner...*, *Atlas Africanus. Morphologie des Afrikanischen Bogengerätes*, *Schwarze Dekameron*, and *Schwarze Sonne Afrik*. He is buried in the Frankfurt Main Cemetery. His works are held in the collections of the Leipzig Museum of Ethnography, the Deutsches Museum, and the Ethnological Museum Berlin.
