Limehouse

Limehouse is a district in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in East London. It is east of Charing Cross, on the northern bank of the River Thames. Its proximity to the river has given it a strong maritime character, which it retains through its riverside public houses and steps, such as The Grapes and Limehouse Stairs.

Limehouse è un quartiere del borgo londinese di Tower Hamlets e si trova sulla riva nord del Tamigi di fronte a Rotherhithe, fra a ovest e Millwall a est. Il nome discende da lime kiln, una fornace di terrecotte sita vicino al fiume e che forniva di stoviglie e tegami le navi che frequentavano il porto di Londra. A chi la visita per la prima volta, dà l'impressione di essere centrata fra Narrow Street e Limehouse Basin, ma essa ha invece il suo punto focale su Limehouse Town Hall nella Commercial Road. Essa si sviluppa dal Limehouse Basin ad ovest fino al margine dell'antica Chinatown in Pennyfields ad est e dal Tamigi a sud fino al Victory Bridge all'incrocio con la Ben Johnson Road e Rhodeswell Road a nord. L'area ha dato il nome al Limehouse Reach, una porzione del Tamigi che va da Shadwell, attraverso Ratcliff e poi Limehouse a Millwall.
