Ein Meteorit [meteoˈrit] ist ein relativ kleiner Festkörper kosmischen Ursprungs, der die Erdatmosphäre durchquert und den Erdboden erreicht hat. Er besteht gewöhnlich überwiegend aus Silikatmineralen oder einer Eisen-Nickel-Legierung, wovon ein gewisser Teil beim Eintritt in die Erdatmosphäre verglüht ist. Da es sich fast immer um vielkörnige Mineral-Aggregate handelt, werden Meteoriten unabhängig von ihrer chemischen Zusammensetzung zu den Gesteinen gezählt.
