Michael Artin

Michael Artin is an American mathematician and university teacher born in Hamburg in 1934. He specializes in algebraic geometry, algebra, and mathematics. Artin was educated at Harvard University and Princeton University. He has served as a teacher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, and the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques. He also held the position of chairperson.

His notable work includes the Artin–Mazur zeta function. Artin received the National Medal of Science and the Wolf Prize in Mathematics. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Artin studied under Oscar Zariski, who was his doctoral advisor. His doctoral students include Yuri Tschinkel, Eric Friedlander, Joseph Mazur, and David Harbater. He is the son of Emil Artin and Natascha Artin Brunswick. He has a child named Wendy Artin. He speaks English and German.
