In campo musicale raggiunse i primi riconoscimenti come collaboratrice del gruppo The Velvet Underground, partecipando all'album The Velvet Underground & Nico come cantante dei brani Femme Fatale, All Tomorrow Parties e I'll Be your Mirror. La sua avventura con i Velvet ebbe vita breve, e nel 1967 si avviò alla carriera solista.
