They are a typical phenomenon in the polar and subpolar zone of discontinuous permafrost. One of their characteristics is having steep slopes that rise above the mire surface. Una palsa es un montículo que sobresale de una turbera con un núcleo de permafrost que abarca turba y ocasionalmente limo. Las palsas se desarrollan típicamente en lugares de alta humedad y con permafrost discontinuo, aunque se han observado palsas en zonas de permafrost continuo. En la actualidad existen palsas en Alaska, Canadá, Islandia, Fennoscandia y Siberia. Al norte del lago Fagnano, en la Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, se han hallado restos de palsas que existieron durante la última glaciación. Varias palsas pueden formar mesetas de permafrost si forman estructuras coalescentes. La palabra palsa viene del las lenguas sami y refiere a montículos en humedales.
