OverviewAI-generated
Phaeophyceae is a class of organisms within the phylum Ochrophyta and kingdom Chromista. The taxon, described by Kjellman in 1891, is commonly known as brown algae. Its nomenclature follows the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants. The group has existed for about 150 million years.
These organisms inhabit marine, brackish, and freshwater environments. The taxon status is accepted. Records of Phaeophyceae are held by institutions such as SDNHM, UCMP, and US, primarily in the United States.
