Phaethornis is a genus of hummingbirds in the hermit subfamily, Phaethornithinae. They occur from southern Mexico, through Central America, to South America as far south as northern Argentina.

Phaethornis is a genus of hummingbirds in the hermit subfamily, Phaethornithinae. They occur from southern Mexico, through Central America, to South America as far south as northern Argentina.

==Taxonomy== The genus Phaethornis was introduced in 1827 by William Swainson with the long-tailed hermit as the type species. The name combines the Ancient Greek phaethōn meaning "sun" and ornis meaning "bird". The genus now contains 27 species.
