Il fotone è il quanto di energia della radiazione elettromagnetica. Storicamente chiamato anche quanto di luce, fu introdotto all'inizio del XX secolo, quando si capì che in un'onda elettromagnetica l'energia è distribuita in pacchetti discreti e indivisibili. Il termine "fotone" deriva dal greco φωτός (photòs), genitivo di φῶς (phòs), che significa luce, e fu coniato a Parigi nel luglio 1926 dal fisico ottico Frithiof Wolfers; pochi mesi dopo fu riutilizzato dal chimico statunitense Gilbert Lewis e subito adottato da molti fisici, divenendo definitivo. Con l'affermarsi della teoria quantistica dei campi il fotone ha acquisito a tutti gli effetti il ruolo di particella associata al campo elettromagnetico, classificata come bosone vettore elementare di massa nulla mediatore dell'interazione elettromagnetica (bosone di gauge).
