Em química e tecnologia, os plásticos são materiais orgânicos poliméricos sintéticos, de constituição macromolecular, dotada de grande maleabilidade (que apresentam a propriedade de adaptar-se em distintas formas), facilmente transformável mediante o emprego de calor e pressão e que serve de matéria-prima para a fabricação dos mais variados objetos: vasos, sacolas, toalhas, embalagens, cortinas, bijuterias, carrocerias, roupas, canudos, sapatos e etc. A matéria-prima dos plásticos, geralmente, é o petróleo. Este é formado por uma complexa mistura de compostos. Pelo fato de estes compostos possuírem diferentes temperaturas de ebulição, é possível separá-los através de um processo conhecido como destilação ou craqueamento. A fração nafta é fornecida para as centrais químicas e petroquímicas, onde passa por uma série de processos, dando origem aos principais monômeros, como, por exemplo, a creolina. São divididos em dois grupos de acordo com as suas características de fusão ou derretimento: termoplásticos e termorrígidos.
