Sie liegt in der Thrakischen Ebene an beiden Ufern der Mariza unweit der Rhodopen. Die Stadt ist das Verwaltungszentrum der gleichnamigen Gemeinde und der Provinz sowie Sitz von zwei weiteren Gemeinden, Mariza und Rodopi. Des Weiteren hat die bulgarisch-orthodoxe Diözese von Plowdiw in Plowdiw ihren Sitz. Plowdiw war eine der Kulturhauptstädte Europas 2019.
