Programmierter Zelltod ist der physiologisch ablaufende Tod von Zellen in einem mehrzelligen Organismus. Dieser dient in der Regel dazu, für die Entwicklung oder den Fortbestand des Organismus unnötige oder hinderliche Zellen gezielt zu entfernen. Das Gegenteil zum programmierten Zelltod stellt der traumatische Tod einer Zelle (Nekrose) dar.
