Prototheca ist eine Gattung von Algen. Sie bildet kugelförmige bis ellipsoide, einzeln vorliegende Zellen und weist kein Chlorophyll auf. Die Gattung wurde erstmals 1894 beschrieben. Einige ihrer Arten spielen eine klinische Rolle als Erreger der Protothekose bei verschiedenen Wirbeltieren.
