Do frazeologii zaliczana jest tylko przy szerszym rozumieniu tego terminu. Nauką o przysłowiach jest , rozpadające się na paremiografię, tj. zbieranie przysłów, oraz paremiologię, tj. ich analizę historyczno-kulturową. W nazewnictwie nieterminologicznym przysłowie to również ogólne określenie na wszelkie rodzaje paremii.
