Roland Petit est le fils de Rose Repetto. Il se forme à l'école de ballet de l'Opéra de Paris auprès de Gustave Ricaux et Serge Lifar et entre dans le corps de ballet en 1940. Il fonde les Ballets des Champs-Élysées en 1945 et les Ballets de Paris en 1948, au Théâtre Marigny, avec Zizi Jeanmaire comme danseuse étoile, qui devient son épouse en 1954, et avec laquelle il a une fille Valentine Petit.
