Sankt Erik drivs fortfarande av två trecylindiga ångmaskiner - även om koleldningen bytts mot olja på 1950-talet. Den aktre maskinen är Sveriges största fungerande sjöångmaskin. År 1977 togs Sankt Erik ur bruk och 1980 överfördes fartyget till Sjöhistoriska museet som museifartyg. Ett avtal mellan Statens maritima museer och föreningen Sankt Eriks vänner gör det möjligt för föreningen att vid speciella tillfällen driva trafik med den drygt 100-åriga isbrytaren.
