A schematic, or schematic diagram, is a designed representation of the elements of a system using abstract, graphic symbols rather than realistic pictures. A schematic usually omits all details that are not relevant to the key information the schematic is intended to convey, and may include oversimplified elements in order to make this essential meaning easier to grasp, as well as additional organization of the information.

الرسم التخطيطي أو المخطط الرسمي هو تمثيل لعناصر النظام باستخدام الرموز المجردة والرسمية بدلا من الصور الحقيقية. لا يشمل المخطط في الغالب التفاصيل التي لا صلة لها بالمعلومات الأساسية المراد رسمها لكن في بعض الحالات يتم تضمين بعضا من تلك العناصر لتسهيل فهم المعنى الأساسي. على سبيل المثال، خريطة المترو يتم تمثيل المحطات على شكل نقاط بدلا من وضع صورتها الحقيقية لضمان وصول المعلومة دون أي فوضى مرئية غير ضرورية. تظهر أيضا الرسوم التخطيطية في العمليات الكيميائية وخطوط الإنتاج بداية من تمثيل السفن والأنابيب مرورا بالصمامات والمضخات الي أصغر معدات النظام، مع التشديد على إظهار وظائف العناصر الفردية وكيفية الربط بينهما وإهمال التفاصيل المادية الخاصة بهم. أما في حالة الرسم التخطيطي للدوائر الإلكترونية فلا يهتم مهندسي التصميم بإظهار الدائرة كما تظهر في الواقع وإنما بشرح كيفية عمل الدائرة.
