De schildwachtklier, sentinel of poortwachterklier is de eerste lymfeklier, waarheen kankercellen uitzaaien. Bij een schildwachtklierprocedure wordt geprobeerd juist deze lymfeklier te onderzoeken, om via een kleine ingreep zo zeker mogelijk te weten of er uitzaaiing naar de lymfklieren heeft plaatsgevonden.
