From its inception in 1989, it has spawned a franchise that includes a series of novels, a collectible card game, two miniature-based tabletop wargames, and multiple video games.

シャドウラン (Shadowrun) はアメリカ合衆国のアナログゲーム・レーベル、FASAコーポレーションが1989年に発表したテーブルトークRPGシステムの1つ。「古代の魔法が蘇った近未来SF世界」を舞台にしたゲームで、サイバーパンクとファンタジー双方のジャンルを融合させた背景世界を持つ。シェアード・ワールド化され、アメリカでは数多くの小説やゲームが作られている。また、日本でも断続的にその一部が展開されている。 「シャドウラン」（shadowrun）とは、「非合法、あるいは少なくとも合法とは断言できないような一連の活動」を意味する。どのような理由によるものであれ、高額の報酬と引き換えにハイリスクな依頼を引き受けてこの一連の反合法的活動に従事する者達のことを、本作品シリーズではシャドウランナー (shadowrunner) と呼ぶ。
