Also known as silk fiber
Silk is a natural protein fiber produced mainly by insect larvae, most commonly the mulberry silkworm, that can be woven into textiles valued for their characteristic shimmery appearance. The fiber's lustrous quality comes from its triangular prism-like structure, and silk is composed primarily of a protein called fibroin with a smaller coating of sericin.
