Ha vinto i 1500 m e i 400 m stile libero ai Giochi Olimpici di Londra nel 2012 e i 200 m stile libero in quelli di Rio de Janeiro nel 2016. E' stato squalificato per violazione delle norme antidoping per un periodo di quattro anni e tre mesi, decorrente dal 2020 al 2024.
