The Reader is een film uit 2008 onder regie van Stephen Daldry. Het verhaal is gebaseerd op dat uit het boek Der Vorleser (1995) van Bernhard Schlink. De film werd genomineerd voor vijf Oscars, waarvan Kate Winslet de Academy Award voor Beste Actrice daadwerkelijk won. The Reader won daarnaast meer dan twintig andere prijzen, waaronder een Golden Globe, een BAFTA Award en een European Film Award (allen voor Winslet) en een Premi David di Donatello voor beste Europese film. De film ging in Nederland op 2 april 2009 in première, twaalf dagen voor de dvd in de Verenigde Staten uitkwam. Wat de reden voor deze late première was, is onbekend.
