La troisième croisade, qui débuta en 1189 et s'acheva en 1192, est une série d’expéditions menées par Frédéric Barberousse, empereur germanique, Philippe Auguste, roi de France, et Richard Cœur de Lion, roi d'Angleterre, dans le but de reprendre Jérusalem et la Terre sainte à Saladin. Cette croisade a permis la reprise d’un certain nombre de ports de Terre sainte, mais n’a pas permis la reconquête de l’arrière-pays, ni la reprise de Jérusalem. Cependant, la libre circulation à Jérusalem fut autorisée aux pèlerins et marchands chrétiens.
