Era considerato uno dei più prolifici progettisti del suo tempo, avendo ottenuto il record di 1 093 brevetti registrati a suo nome, in tutto il mondo, inclusi Stati Uniti, Italia, Regno Unito, Francia e Germania. Diede origine alla Motion Picture Patents Company (più nota come Edison Trust), compagnia formata dall'unione delle nove maggiori case di produzione cinematografiche dell'epoca.
