Tom Dumoulin is a former professional cyclist and one of the most successful Dutch riders of his generation. Born and raised in Maastricht, he initially had different ambitions. Tom dreamed of a future in the medical field and wanted to become a doctor. That his path would ultimately lead to the top of international cycling was something he could never have predicted. His love for the bike came later, but it grew quickly. When Tom realized he had a talent for cycling — especially time trialing — he decided to commit seriously to the sport. His talent didn’t go unnoticed. In 2011, he signed his first professional contract with Team Sunweb, the team with which he would later achieve great success. His rise to the top of the cycling world was rapid. While Tom was initially known as a time trial specialist, he developed into a well-rounded general classification rider in the years that followed. His true breakthrough came in 2017, when he became the first Dutchman ever to win the Giro d’Italia. It was not only a major sporting achievement but also proof that he belonged among the world's elite. The years that followed brought both triumphs and challenges. In 2018, Tom finished second in both the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France. He also claimed multiple national time trial titles and won silver medals at the Olympic Games and the World Championships. But life as a top athlete also had its downsides. The constant pressure to perform, physical injuries, and mental fatigue began to take their toll. In 2022, Tom made the conscious decision to retire from professional cycling. He wanted to make room again for freedom and autonomy—values that had always been important to him but had been lost along the way during his career. Since then, he has been exploring new passions and challenges. His love for cycling remains, but it now plays a different role in his life. Tom remains closely involved in the cycling world and enjoys sharing his experiences and insights with others. With his openness, character, and impressive career, he is an inspiring speaker and mentor at clinics and events. His story—shaped by both victories and setbacks—shows what it means to strive, to fall, to rise again, and ultimately to choose your own path.

Encyclopedic overview

Tom Dumoulin ( Dutch pronunciation: [ˈtɔm dymuˈlɛ̃ː]; born 11 November 1990) is a retired Dutch professional road bicycle racer who last rode for UCI WorldTeam Visma–Lease a Bike. He has won the Giro d'Italia and nine stages across the three Grand Tours, five medals in three different World Championships and two Olympic silver medals.

Known for his time-trialing ability, Dumoulin excelled in climbing and was viewed by many as a climbing specialist. At the 2015 Vuelta a España, Dumoulin had two stage victories and led the race into its final weekend, before losing four minutes on the penultimate stage and ultimately finished sixth overall. He led the 2016 Giro d'Italia during its opening week and won two stages at the 2016 Tour de France. His sole Grand Tour in 2017 was the Giro d'Italia, where he overcame stomach problems and a 53-second deficit entering the final stage to become the first Dutch winner of the race and the first Dutch Grand Tour winner since Joop Zoetemelk in 1980. Later that year, he became the first Dutch male to win the time trial at the UCI Road World Championships. In 2018, Dumoulin finished second overall at both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France.
