La torbernite è un minerale fortemente radioattivo, un fosfato idrato di uranio e rame, appartenente al gruppo dell'autunite. Fu descritta per la prima volta nel 1772 da . Nel 1788 Abraham Gottlob Werner (Wehrau, 25 settembre 1749 - Dresda, 30 giugno 1817) geologo e mineralogista, propose inizialmente la denominazione calcolite mentre l'attuale nome è in onore di Torbern Olof Bergman (9 marzo 1735 - 8 luglio 1784), chimico, mineralogista e fisico svedese.
