الآلة الكاتبة أو المِرقنة أو المِكْتَاب «الآلة الطابعة» يعود تاريخ صنعها إلى 1714. حصل مصممها ومخترعها هنري ميل على براءة الاختراع في تلك السنة. وتعتبر آلته الكاتبة الأم الأولى لما نراه من الآلات الكاتبة في وقتنا الحاضر. ولكن بوجود الحاسوب وما يتبعه من الآلات الطابعة يبدو أن دور الآلة الكاتبة قد أفل.كان يتطلع من خلالها إلى استحداث نظام جديد في الكتابة الآلية بدلا من النظام اليدوي التقليدي، وبالرغم من أهمية الفكرة، إلا أن ميل فشل في إقناع الناس بأهمية اختراعه.
