With the help of diesels 4884 and 1996 she was moved over 40 miles to the UP West Colton yard. The Big Boy will stay there for the rest of winter being inspected and looked over more thoroughly. Plans are to be moved for the rest of the journey to Cheyenne, WY in March of 2014 when the weather is nicer. Posted: Dec 7, 2013 @ 15:12:31 by Peter M. Preston Still stuck in Pomona! Rumor is UP must pay used locomotive taxes before 4014 leaves the state. How much does a 600 ton locomotive need the pay in taxes? Posted: Jul 24, 2013 @ 24:07:38 by James F. Union Pacific has just announced today, 07/23/13 that UP 4-8-8-4 4014 "Big Boy" has been acquired from the Southern California Railroad Chapter to the Union Pacific to be restored to operation in Cheyenne, Wyoming as another addition to the Union Pacific Steam Heritage fleet. Plans are to move Big Boy from Pomona to Cheyenne and have operating in the next 3-5 years. The Big Boy is a hair under 700 tons and produces 6500-7500 hp depending on the weather and how good the engineer is. many books and documents say the 4000's produce 7000 hp, others say it was 8000 hp and most are true to say its actual 6300 hp but 4000's were known to have fluctuating hp like all steam locomotives and that they could still produce alot more hp than there calculated hp. The 4000's could pull a fully loaded 5 mile freight train on level track. doing a quick calculation in my head they could pull roughly 20,000 tons! the 4000's pulled nominal 1 mile 4500 ton trains up it's famed Sherman hill and if you do the math and multiply the 4,500 times the 5 mile train it could pull on leve
