Als je een plek weet waar cranberries groeien, dan vertel je dat niet aan een ander. Daarvoor zijn ze te lekker. Oorspronkelijk komt hij uit oostelijk Noord-Amerika. In Nederland is hij ingevoerd op alle Waddeneilanden en in Drenthe. Hij groeit in voedselarme natte (duin-)valleien en venen. Cranberrytaart, -jam en -siroop kennen we vooral van Terschelling, maar de meeste bessen worden tegenwoordig op Vlieland geoogst.

Vaccinium macrocarpon, also called large cranberry, American cranberry and bearberry, is a North American species of cranberry in the subgenus Oxycoccus.
The name cranberry comes from the shape of the flower stamen, which looks like a crane's beak.
