L'alto est un instrument à cordes frottées, plus grave, plus grand et plus épais que le violon, plus aigu, plus petit et plus fin que le violoncelle. Muni de quatre cordes (do, sol, ré et la), sa gamme de fréquences fondamentales va de 128 à 2 600 Hz. Probablement issu du rébec, apparu au XVIe siècle en Italie, sa forme moderne se fixe au XIXe siècle. L'alto a longtemps été uniquement un instrument d'accompagnement, d'orchestre et de musique de chambre, jusqu'au XXe siècle, période où son répertoire en tant que soliste s'agrandit considérablement.
