It was the next major development in firearms technology after the matchlock, and the first self-igniting firearm. Its name is from its rotating steel wheel to provide ignition. Developed in Europe around 1500, it was used alongside the matchlock (), the snaplock (), the snaphance (), and the flintlock ().

Chave de roda, ou bloqueio de roda ("wheellock"), ou ainda "sistema de rodete", é um mecanismo de ignição, onde uma pedra de pirita, envolta por tecido ou couro em uma presilha, entra em contato com uma roda de ferro serrilhada em toda a sua borda, na qual era encaixada uma chave semelhante às utilizadas para dar corda em relógios, que fazia a preparação do disparo. Quando o gatilho era acionado, a mola espiral era liberada, fazendo a roda girar produzindo as fagulhas desejadas para dar início à ignição da pólvora.
