In the Hebrew Bible, abaddon'' is used with reference to a bottomless pit, often appearing alongside the place Sheol ( ), meaning the resting place of dead peoples.

Abaddon (hebr. אֲבַדּוֹן - awadon – niszczyciel, gr. Apollyon, łac. Exterminans) – pierwotnie inna nazwa szeolu, następnie anioł zagłady opisany w Apokalipsie św. Jana (9,11), który jako anioł przepaści wyłania się z otchłani i niesie cierpienie tym, którzy nie mają pieczęci Boga na czołach. Także anioł czeluści (otchłani) w ogóle. Abaddon jest księciem rządzącym siódmą hierarchią demonów, którzy rządzą mocami zła, niezgody, wojny i zniszczenia.
