It is classified within the monotypic family Actinosphaeriidae and suborder Actinosphaerina. Species of Actinosphaerium are distinguished by their large number of nuclei in each cell. Their axopodia sometimes terminate on the surface of nuclei. Vacuoles are abundant in the periphery of the cytoplasm.
