Andrew Ure

Andrew Ure (1778–1857) was a British physician, chemist, astronomer, and economist. Born in Glasgow and educated at the University of Glasgow, he worked in Scotland and was employed by the University of Strathclyde. He was a member of the Royal Society, which recognized him in its collection, and received the award of Fellow of the Royal Society.

Ure wrote in English and his works covered economics, chemistry, and geology. His notable publications include *Ure's dictionary of arts, manufactures, and mines*, *The cotton manufacture of Great Britain systematically investigated and illustrated by 150 original figures*, and *Philosophie des manufactures, ou, Economie industrielle de la fabrication du coton, de la laine, du lin et de la soie*. He is also described in the Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary. He died in London in 1857 and is buried at Highgate Cemetery.
